Pakenham is a rapidly growing south eastern suburb of Melbourne in Victoria (postcode 3810), Australia, known for a blend of residential, commercial, and rural charm. Pakenham is 53 km south-east of Melbourne’s CBD and the most populous in the Shire of Cardinia. Once a small rural town, it has transformed into a bustling area with new housing estates, shopping precincts, and community facilities, attracting families and professionals. It offers a range of amenities, including schools, parks, and recreational areas, while retaining some of its agricultural roots. The suburb is well-connected to Melbourne via the Pakenham railway line and the Princes Highway, making it a popular choice for commuters seeking a balance between urban convenience and suburban living.

Pakenham, originally a small settlement built around a railway station on the route to Gippsland, has grown into a commuter suburb of Melbourne, situated approximately 57 km east of the city centre.
The area was originally part of the territory of the Bunurong people, and around 1843 a pastoral run was taken up on Toomuc Creek. By 1850 a hotel had been established where the track into Gippsland crossed the creek, soon becoming a coach staging post and the nucleus of a small settlement.
The township’s name is thought to honour a British general who served in the Crimean War, and has been in use since the first surveys of the 1850s.
Soldier settlement after both world wars saw fruit and vegetable growing take hold across the district, and processing plants were built to service the farms.
The arrival of suburban electric train services in 1975 marked a turning point, and Pakenham’s liveability improved further when the Princes Highway bypassed the town centre in 2007.
After council amalgamations in 1994, Pakenham became the administrative centre of Cardinia Shire. Today it is one of Melbourne’s fastest-growing outer suburbs, attracting families drawn by affordable housing, good schools and the easy access it provides to both the city and the scenic Gippsland region beyond.
The Pakenham of today blends suburban convenience with genuine natural beauty. Bushland reserves, creek corridors and aqueduct trails sit alongside a rapidly developing town centre, while nearby hills and valleys offer cool-climate wineries and working farms. It is a suburb still finding its character — and all the more interesting for it.
Things To Do
Lakeside Recreation Reserve
Lakeside Recreation Reserve is a facility enjoyed by locals and visitors alike, featuring an easy flat 1.5 km walk around the lake with two child-friendly exercise and play areas at one end.
The lake teems with birdlife, and from October to April a local sailing club operates on the water every Sunday.
Free gas barbecues, public toilets and well-maintained pathways — fully accessible for prams, wheelchairs and scooters — make it an ideal spot for a relaxed family outing.
Cardinia Aqueduct Trail
One of the area’s best-kept secrets, the Cardinia Aqueduct Trail follows the open concrete aqueduct through pretty bushland at the foothills of the Dandenong Ranges.
Multiple segments mean you can choose your distance, and the trail is open to walkers, cyclists and horse riders alike. The trail feels like you’re deep in the bush despite being very close to Pakenham, with abundant birdlife and native orchids in bloom during spring.
Smiley Brewing Co
Pakenham’s first microbrewery, Smiley Brewing is located inside a modern warehouse in an industrial zone in Pakenham’s south — an oasis of craft beer on the edge of Melbourne.
Founders Trent and Kylie Butcher opened the doors in 2023 after a multi-year journey involving COVID, planning hurdles and a lot of local support.
Eighteen taps pour a broad range of house-brewed beers alongside cocktails, with rotating food trucks on the weekend and regular live music. Its proximity to the Monash Freeway makes it a natural stopping point between Melbourne and Phillip Island, Wilsons Prom and South Gippsland. Open Friday to Sunday.
Toomuc Valley Winery
A short drive north of Pakenham through the scenic Toomuc Valley leads to this small cool-climate winery producing chardonnay, pinot noir and sparkling varieties. The Toomuc Valley is a hidden gem, and the winery offers a peaceful setting to taste cool-climate wines in beautiful surroundings.
The drive itself, winding past orchards and hobby farms on the hills above town, is a worthwhile experience in its own right.
Toomuc Creek Reserve
A paved and gravel shared path passes through a series of parks and reserves running alongside Toomuc Creek, used for riding, running and walking, with amenities including public restrooms, picnic areas, BBQs and play equipment along the way.
The creek corridor forms a natural green spine through the suburb, culminating in a man-made wetland home to egrets, swamp hens and a variety of other waterbirds.
Southside Racing Pakenham
The Pakenham Racing Club, first formed in 1875, relocated from its original town-centre site to a new 246-hectare equine precinct near Tynong.
Now operating as Southside Racing, the venue hosts both day and night racing events throughout the year, attracting horse racing enthusiasts from across the region, with a 2,000-metre turf course and state-of-the-art facilities for horses and spectators.
Race days here have a relaxed country atmosphere that sets them apart from metropolitan meetings.
Pakenham Farmers Market
The Pakenham Farmers Market is held on the fourth Sunday of each month, offering fresh local produce and artisanal goods that provide a genuine glimpse into the local agricultural community.
It is a reliable way to connect with the farms and growers of the broader Cardinia Shire, with seasonal fruit, vegetables, dairy, honey and handmade products regularly on offer.
