Scoresby is a settled suburban community approximately 29 km east of Melbourne’s CBD, within the City of Knox. Its western half adjoins the Dandenong Creek corridor and wetlands, while the eastern side is home to extensive industrial estates housing major national and international corporations, including Nintendo’s Australian headquarters.

Despite this industrial footprint, Scoresby punches well above its weight as a destination, with a cluster of genuinely distinctive family attractions along Ferntree Gully Road that draw visitors from across greater Melbourne.

Scoresby Creek

History

The Parish of Scoresby was surveyed and named in 1857 in honour of William Scoresby, the Arctic navigator and authority on terrestrial magnetism, who had visited the colony the previous year to conduct experiments in or near the area that now bears his name.

A village emerged in the 1870s around the intersection of Ferntree Gully and Stud Roads, with a school established in 1872 and a Methodist church following in 1874. Much of the surrounding land was swampy, but once drainage works were completed, the rich alluvial soil proved well suited to market gardening. Travel Victoria

After World War I, George Knox settled in Scoresby as an orchardist. He became the local member of Parliament, was knighted, and the City of Knox — in which Scoresby sits — was named in his honour.

In the postwar decades Scoresby concentrated on market gardening, with the Brussels Sprout Growers Association prominent enough to earn the suburb the title of Victoria’s brussels sprout capital. Subdivision of the market gardens began in 1959, and by the 1990s few remained.

Things To Do

Chesterfield Farm

Chesterfield Farm is a fully working farm and an ideal place to take the family to experience rural farm life, open to the public seven days a week. It is a site of great regional significance with one of the oldest buildings in the area and a long history of European settlement. The daily farm show is always a highlight, including sheepdog demonstrations, sheep shearing, whip cracking, cow milking, cream separating and bottle feeding of lambs and kid goats. A separate nursery area allows younger children to get up close with smaller animals, and tractor rides, covered picnic areas and a café round out a well-organised family outing. Tickets must be pre-purchased online.

Caribbean Park & Market

The Caribbean Boat Factory, established after World War II, developed a lake for testing its fibreglass boats. That lake — Caribbean Lake — eventually became the centrepiece of Caribbean Gardens, a recreational precinct offering facilities for boating, water-skiing and picnics. The market that grew up around the site became one of the largest in Victoria, with over 1,000 stall sites covering produce, clothing, antiques, electronics and more. The precinct today, known as Caribbean Park, continues to host the popular Wednesday and Sunday markets alongside the lake, with hovercraft rides and lakeside walking among the other drawcards.

National Steam Centre

The National Steam Centre is managed by volunteers from the Melbourne Steam Traction Engine Club, formed in 1963, and houses the largest collection of heritage engines in Australia — more than 800 items, most of them in working order. The collection spans steam engines, boilerhouses, diesel and traction engines, early trucks and tractors, railway engines, earth-moving machines and small oil engines. A miniature train loops the grounds every Sunday for a bargain $3 a ride, and on the last Sunday of each month the monthly running day sees many of the larger exhibits spring to life.

The annual Steamfest over the Labour Day weekend is the centrepiece event. Open Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays.

Yabby Hill Park (Jells Park, Wheelers Hill)

Just across the boundary from Scoresby in neighbouring Wheelers Hill, Jells Park is one of Melbourne’s most popular and expansive public parks, drawing over 700,000 visitors a year across its 129 hectares. At its heart is Yabby Hill Park, a multimillion-dollar nature-based adventure playground built into and around a gentle hillside. The design celebrates local native animals at every turn, with a giant yabby at the entrance, a mob of kangaroos, possums and bird wings woven into the play structures — each sharing information about the local wildlife. Features include trampolines, a ropes course, floating rocks, a large sandpit with water pumps, round cubby houses, swings and community gathering circles, as well as a wheelchair-accessible merry-go-round and accessible paths throughout. The hilltop wooden tower offers lovely views across the Dandenong Creek Valley to the lake and the Lysterfield hills beyond. Covered BBQ areas, picnic tables, a café and public toilets round out the facilities, making this an easy full-day outing for families. Access is from Waverley Road, Wheelers Hill.

Caribbean Rollerama

One of Melbourne’s best-known and longest-running roller skating venues, Caribbean Rollerama on Ferntree Gully Road has been a local institution for decades. It offers a vast, well-maintained rink with skate hire, public sessions across the week, Friday and Saturday evening disco sessions, birthday party packages and a dedicated skating programme for learners. The atmosphere is friendly and welcoming for all ages, making it as popular with young families on a Saturday morning as with teenagers on a Friday night.

Dandenong Creek Trail

Dandenong Creek Trail

Scoresby’s western boundary follows the Dandenong Creek corridor, a significant green spine through Melbourne’s eastern suburbs. The shared walking and cycling path along the creek passes through wetlands and remnant bush, rich in waterbirds and native wildlife. Connections from this trail extend south to Jells Park — a sprawling lake and grassland reserve in nearby Wheelers Hill — and north through Knoxfield towards Lysterfield Park, making it the starting point for much longer recreational journeys into the surrounding landscape.

Project Brewing Company

Just across the boundary in neighbouring Rowville, Project Brewing Company has built a strong following for its wide and rotating tap list of craft beers, relaxed industrial-space venue and food truck serving burgers and sides. Live music runs on Thursdays and Fridays, there is outdoor space for warmer months, and the venue is family-friendly during daytime sessions. A natural complement to a day spent exploring the attractions along the Ferntree Gully Road corridor.
