Clayton is a residential suburb 19 km south-east of central Melbourne, situated within the City of Monash. For almost a century after Crown Land sales in the 1850s, the Clayton district serviced the metropolis through market gardens, flower and dairy farms, horse and cattle pasture, and abattoirs. The suburb takes its name from Clayton Vale, a property on the south-eastern corner of Clayton and Centre Roads owned by Melbourne solicitor John Hughes Clayton between 1865 and 1877. The construction of the railway line about one kilometre south of Dandenong Road in 1878 prompted the start of a second township where the line crosses Clayton Road.

Clayton has long been a heartland for manufacturing and engineering, with Volkswagen, Bosch and Repco building factories after World War II.

The suburb’s character shifted decisively in 1961 with the opening of Monash University on its northern fringe — now Australia’s largest university — and again in 1987 when the Monash Medical Centre opened on Clayton Road, establishing the suburb as a major hub for health and medical research.

Clayton’s population is younger and more male-skewed than the Victorian average, with a median age of just 28 compared to 38 for the state, driven largely by its enormous student population.

The suburb has always been shaped by successive waves of migration — from Greek migrants in the mid-20th century, to Chinese and Southeast Asian communities from the 1970s, to a more recent influx from India — giving Clayton one of Melbourne’s most genuinely multicultural identities and a food scene to match.

Things To Do

Clayton Road Shopping Strip

The Clayton Road strip offers a host of South-East and Southern Asian-style eateries and markets that are well worth a look, with more than 200 businesses ready to tantalise your tastebuds.   The strip is anchored by the Hello Clayton business precinct and hums with activity on weekends when market stalls spill onto the footpaths.

Thomas & Mary Street Murals

The stunning laneway murals along Thomas and Mary Streets, just off the main street, offer a new take on the local arts and culture scene. Since 2008 the nearby Clayton Pinnacles stand tall representing the enduring resilience of the Clayton community. The murals are regularly refreshed by local and visiting artists.

Clayton Station & Skyrail

The elevation of the Cranbourne/Pakenham line through Clayton included a brand-new station with a striking elevated design. Beneath the rail overpass is greenery and open spaces for relaxation or to try basketball or skating, while a heritage-listed railway shelter from the old station sits beneath the new one. It is a genuinely interesting piece of urban infrastructure that has transformed the heart of the suburb.

Djerring Trail

The 17 km Djerring Trail runs between Caulfield and Dandenong, much of it under the elevated rail overpass, and Clayton at the halfway mark is the perfect spot for a break and a bite to eat as you traverse the trail. The shared path is well-suited for cyclists, joggers and skaters, and connects a string of suburbs that would otherwise require navigating busy arterial roads.

Namatjira Park

Named for the late Aboriginal artist Albert Namatjira and officially opened in 1980, Namatjira Park has an array of sporting facilities, a bowling club with a bistro, a large playground with picnic and barbecue facilities, a skate park, a bushland area and wetlands that are home to waterbirds and other wildlife. Raised boardwalks wind around the wetland edges, and an illuminated running track through the bushland — complete with outdoor gym equipment — makes it a genuine all-hours urban retreat.

Spring Valley Golf Club

Melbourne’s south-east is world-famous for its sandbelt golf courses, and Clayton has one — the Spring Valley Golf Club in Heatherton Road. This picturesque course was first established in 1948. It is a private club but extends reciprocal rights to members of affiliated clubs across Australia and around the world. It includes teaching and training facilities, first-class dining and entertainment and, of course, 18 holes of golfing pleasure.
