History

The suburb takes its name from the Lang Warring pastoral run of 1843, which extended from the current suburb to the Western Port Coastal Reserve at Tyabb. By the 1880s the pastoral run had reduced to the Langwarrin Estate of about 7,000 acres, and a military reserve was subsequently established on the area’s western edges — famous for holding prisoners of war during World War I and acting as a military hospital for soldiers returning from overseas.

A new Langwarrin emerged about 3 km east of the railway station, where a school opened in 1907. Cruden Farm on Cranbourne-Frankston Road was established in 1928 by Herald Sun executive Keith Murdoch as a gift to his bride, Elisabeth — a property and garden that would become one of Australia’s most celebrated private estates. The Langwarrin Military Reserve was closed in 1980 and transferred to the State Government, becoming the Langwarrin Flora and Fauna Reserve in 1985.

Things To Do

McClelland Sculpture Park & Gallery

The McClelland Gallery & Sculpture Park is a sprawling green campus dotted with over a hundred wonderful permanent pieces. Every year or two the site hosts the most lucrative sculpture survey and award in Australia, during which an additional section of the park is opened up and populated with cutting-edge outdoor sculptures. The indoor gallery features two main spaces with new exhibitions rotating every few months, while the grounds — with their dog-friendly paths, café, lake and treed walkways — make for a genuinely enjoyable few hours regardless of prior interest in contemporary art. Open Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday 10am–4pm.

Cruden Farm

Cruden Farm is the beloved former home of Dame Elisabeth Murdoch — more than eighty years in the making and the heart of a working farm. Strong, healthy trees of all ages form its backbone, grass adds texture with emerald lawns and rough-cut swathes, and water in lakes and pools gives depth and sparkle. The iconic driveway is lined with 130 lemon-scented gums that Keith and Elisabeth planted in 1930, and the walled Picking Garden features over 125 varieties of rose, with perennial borders overflowing in season. In 2012 the property was gifted by Dame Elisabeth Murdoch for people to enjoy as a place of public recreation, now managed by a charitable trust. Entry is $10 per adult; guided walking tours are available on Sunday open days. Open Monday–Friday 10am–4pm and one Sunday per month (not in June, July or August).

Langwarrin Flora & Fauna Reserve

Langwarrin Flora and Fauna Reserve is one of the few remaining areas on the south-eastern fringe of Melbourne recognised as significant for the conservation of indigenous flora and fauna. The 214-hectare reserve has an important place in military history, with almost a 100-year history of military use spanning from 1886 to 1979. The reserve comprises vegetation of state significance with 300 indigenous flora species — equating to 45 percent of the species indigenous to the Mornington Peninsula — and provides important habitat for native fauna, particularly small mammals. A total of 98 bird species have been recorded here, including the rare Southern Emu-wren, Glossy Black Cockatoo and Powerful Owl, making it an excellent spot for birdwatching. Walking, cycling and horse riding tracks wind through the reserve, and the Langwarrin Historical Trail visits remnants of the military era. No amenities on site; access from McClelland Drive.

Mulberry Hill

In nearby Langwarrin South stands Mulberry Hill, the former home of artist Sir Daryl Lindsay and his wife Joan Lindsay, who wrote Picnic at Hanging Rock within its walls. The heritage-listed property was bequeathed by Joan Lindsay to the National Trust of Australia and is open to the public. Guided tours led by knowledgeable volunteer guides take visitors through rooms that retain the atmosphere of a house still inhabited — an extraordinary collection of artworks, personal effects and stories spanning a world that included Vivien Leigh, Laurence Olivier and the cream of Australia’s mid-20th-century artistic and literary life. Located on Golf Links Road.

Lloyd Park Reserve

Langwarrin’s main community sporting hub sits along Cranbourne-Frankston Road, hosting netball, tennis, football and cricket under floodlights on a large, well-maintained ground. It is home to the Langwarrin Kangaroos — one of Victoria’s largest junior football clubs — and a hub for weekend sport throughout the seasons. A generous off-leash dog area and accessible paths make it a popular everyday destination as well as a sporting venue.

Moonlit Sanctuary Wildlife Conservation Park

A short drive south in Pearcedale, Moonlit Sanctuary is one of the Mornington Peninsula’s most rewarding family attractions. The park focuses on protecting and breeding endangered Australian species, with close encounters with wallabies, kangaroos, wombats, reptiles and a remarkable range of native birds across its spacious grounds. Keeper talks and animal interaction sessions run throughout the day, and the large wetlands café with boardwalk provides a lovely spot to rest between encounters. Open daily 9:30am–4pm.
