Chadstone is a suburb 14 km south-east of Melbourne’s CBD, sitting within the City of Monash and bounded by Scotchmans Creek to the south, the Glen Waverley railway line to the north, Warrigal Road to the west and Huntingdale Road to the east.
Beyond the centre, Chadstone is a quiet, predominantly residential suburb with generous parks, a notable sports culture and the Scotchmans Creek corridor threading along its southern edge. Residents describe it as the best of both worlds — a peaceful, green suburb with excellent parks and open spaces, but with all the convenience of Australia’s largest shopping centre on the doorstep. Holmesglen Institute, with its Chadstone campus at the corner of Batesford and Warrigal Roads, adds a significant educational presence to the suburb’s character.

History
Before being named Chadstone it was known as Carnegie North, and many of the houses in the area were built in the postwar period using prefabricated concrete produced at the current site of Holmesglen Institute.
The suburb’s identity was shaped decisively in September 1960, when Myer opened what was then Australia’s largest shopping centre on the site of the former Convent of the Good Shepherd. The development was driven by Ken Myer, who in the early 1950s was convinced that retailing’s future lay in the American style of drive-in shopping centres. An American firm advised that the optimal growth area was in Melbourne’s south-east, and the convent’s green-fields site, surrounded by a middle-class family catchment, was selected. What opened as a single open-air mall with 33 stores has since grown, through successive expansions, into something altogether different. Chadstone Shopping Centre is now styled as Melbourne’s fashion capital and draws over 20 million visitors annually, making it one of the most visited retail destinations in the Southern Hemisphere.

Things To Do
Chadstone Shopping Centre
Chadstone Shopping Centre opened on 3 October 1960 as the first self-contained regional shopping centre in Melbourne, and marked the transformation of Australian shopping from traditional strip and city-centre precincts to the now familiar mall model. Today it is a genuinely vast destination in its own right, with over 550 stores spanning luxury boutiques, international high street labels, Australian cult brands and anchor department stores. A $685 million redevelopment completed in 2025 introduced The Social Quarter — with Archie Brothers Cirque Electrique, Strike Bowling, Holey Moley and Melbourne’s first Hijinx Hotel — and The Market Pavilion, a European-style fresh food precinct with over 50 gourmet retailers that opened in March 2025. Entertainment options also include a state-of-the-art Hoyts Cinema complex and the Legoland Discovery Centre Melbourne. A free tourist shuttle operates daily from Federation Square, and the centre has over 11,000 parking spaces. Open late Thursday to Saturday.
Batesford Reserve
Perched on one of Chadstone’s higher points, Batesford Reserve is a versatile community park that rewards visitors with sweeping views of Melbourne’s skyline. The 15-acre reserve includes a children’s playground, a dedicated off-leash dog area, BBQ and picnic facilities, basketball courts and cricket nets. It hosts community events and markets throughout the year and, thanks to its elevated position, draws locals at New Year’s Eve for uninterrupted views of the city’s fireworks display.
Jordan Reserve
A well-maintained community oval and recreation space on Burton Street, Jordan Reserve is the social hub of Chadstone’s sporting life. A cricket pitch and nets, football oval, children’s playground with flying fox, tennis club and a club pavilion serve a diverse range of local clubs and casual users throughout the week and on weekends. The reserve has ample parking on two sides and is an easy walk from the surrounding residential streets.
Scotchmans Creek Trail
The Scotchmans Creek Trail is a shared-use path running approximately 16.5 km from East Malvern railway station through to Jells Park, following Scotchmans Creek through the eastern suburbs. The western section along Chadstone’s southern boundary is largely flat and pleasant, passing through leafy parkland with ducks, native birds and wetland areas. A 200-metre tunnel beneath the Monash Freeway features local community artwork, and outdoor exercise equipment is dotted along the route. The trail connects westward to the Gardiners Creek Trail and eastward all the way to Jells Park and the Dandenong Creek network, making it a useful spine for longer cycling and walking excursions.
Waverley Basketball Association
One of Melbourne’s longest-established and most active basketball associations, the Waverley Basketball Association on Batesford Road runs competitions for juniors and adults across multiple courts. Open seven days from 9am with evening sessions running until 10–11pm, it is a genuine community sporting hub that caters to players from beginners through to competitive league level.
Holmesglen Institute
The Chadstone campus of Holmesglen Institute sits at the corner of Batesford and Warrigal Roads and is one of the suburb’s most prominent educational institutions. Holmesglen is one of Victoria’s largest TAFE providers, offering an extensive range of vocational and further education courses. The campus has long been a significant employer and community anchor in the suburb, and its presence contributes to the steady foot traffic and vitality of the Batesford Road precinct.
