Narre Warren sits approximately 38 km south-east of Melbourne’s CBD within the City of Casey, of which it serves as the council seat. Rapid residential expansion from the 1980s onwards transformed Narre Warren from a semi-rural town into one of the south-east’s major suburban hubs, with a recorded population of nearly 28,000 at the 2021 census. The suburb’s most significant recent addition is Bunjil Place, the City of Casey’s $300 million civic and arts precinct that opened in 2017 and serves as a cultural anchor for the entire region.

Bunjil Place, Narre Warren

History

The name is of Aboriginal origin — the most widely accepted translation being ‘small hills’ or ‘hilly country’. A pastoral run was established on Dandenong Creek as early as 1837, and the original township of Narre Warren took shape in the 1870s along what is now Narre Warren North, around an Anglican church, a Methodist chapel and a government school. When the Melbourne–Gippsland railway line was constructed in the late 1870s, it passed several kilometres south of the original settlement, and a new township developed around the railway station. This new settlement gradually claimed the Narre Warren name, and the original township was renamed Narre Warren North — a naming shuffle that still characterises the area today.

The general store and post office building established near the new railway station in 1857 survives as a local landmark, a quiet reminder of the suburb’s early character as a settlement of orchards, dairy farms and mixed agriculture serving produce to Melbourne by rail. In 1956, Russian immigrant Isador Magid began acquiring land at Narre Warren and, in collaboration with architect Robin Boyd, developed the Fountain Gate estate at the corner of the Princes Highway and Narre Warren North Road. Boyd’s Radburn-style street layout — characterised by linear parks running between rear boundaries of houses and no through roads — was distinctive in Australian planning terms, and the estate gave its name to the regional shopping centre that opened on the site in 1970. That centre has since grown into Westfield Fountain Gate, today Australia’s second largest shopping centre by area.

Things To Do

Westfield Fountain Gate

The dominant presence in Narre Warren’s commercial landscape, Westfield Fountain Gate on Overland Drive is Australia’s second largest shopping centre by area — behind only Chadstone. More than 320 retailers span the usual major department stores and supermarkets through to specialty fashion, electronics, homewares and dining, with Village Cinemas on the upper level and a major bus interchange servicing the surrounding suburbs. The centre also holds a small piece of Australian pop culture history: its name directly inspired the fictional Fountain Lakes shopping centre at the heart of the television series Kath & Kim, though the show’s interior scenes were actually filmed at Westfield Southland.

Bunjil Place

Opened in 2017 as the City of Casey’s flagship civic and cultural facility, Bunjil Place is one of the most impressive community precincts in Melbourne’s south-east. The award-winning building — its dramatic timber-and-glass roof designed to evoke the protective wings of Bunjil, the wedge-tailed eagle central to Kulin Nation creation stories — houses an 846-seat professional theatre, a gallery with rotating exhibitions, a three-level public library, a multipurpose studio, function and meeting rooms, a café and an open outdoor plaza. The theatre programme runs year-round with professional touring productions, live music, comedy and community events. It is directly adjacent to Westfield Fountain Gate and a short walk or bus ride from Narre Warren station.

Casey ARC

Located immediately alongside Bunjil Place on Patrick Northeast Drive, Casey ARC is the City of Casey’s major aquatic and fitness facility. A wave pool, multiple lap and leisure pools, a fully equipped gymnasium, group fitness classes and learn-to-swim programmes across several age groups make it a comprehensive community recreation hub. Open from 5:30am on weekdays, it caters to early-morning swimmers and gym-goers as well as families seeking a weekend water activity. The proximity to Bunjil Place and Westfield Fountain Gate makes it easy to combine a morning swim with a café visit or afternoon shopping.
