Berwick is situated in Melbourne’s outer south-eastern suburbs, between Narre Warren and Beaconsfield. Originally a rich agricultural and pastoral area during the 1800s, it developed into a satellite town of Melbourne before being incorporated as a suburb of the city during the 1990s, driven by thriving property development in the district.

The suburb of Berwick today is a compelling mix of old and new. The commercial centre along High Street and adjacent streets retains a 19th-century English village character, with a number of historic buildings, manicured gardens and streets lined with deciduous trees. The Berwick Inn, originally known as the Border Hotel, dates to 1857; nearby, the Berwick Mechanics Institute & Free Library has occupied its present site since 1880. The former post office, with its imposing facade and arches, was built on the corner of High Street and Gloucester Avenue in 1885, and several churches around the town centre also date back to the late 1800s. The grand boulevard of High Street extends eastwards towards Beaconsfield, lined with poplar trees as an Avenue of Honour commemorating those who fought in the First World War.

Beyond the historic core, newer suburban estates — including Timbarra, Brentwood and Berwick Springs — have grown up to the north-west and south, served by local shopping centres such as Parkhill Plaza and Eden Rise Village. To the north, the suburb gives way to rural landscapes: a drive along Beaumont Road winds through horse stud farms and homesteads, ascending into the hills with sweeping views across the district. A little further on lies the small community of Harkaway, nestled in undulating countryside with tree-lined streets and a quiet, village-like atmosphere.

Things To Do

Wilson Botanic Park

One of Berwick’s premier attractions, Wilson Botanic Park is a remarkable 39-hectare green space with a fascinating origin. Established in 1992 around and within a former basalt quarry, it features scenic and tranquil parkland with picnic lawns, BBQs, playgrounds and walking tracks. The park is home to more than 1,000 plant species — both native and exotic — and over 80 kinds of wildlife, including birds, turtles, frogs and lizards. Highlights include the Hoo Hoo Tower, which offers commanding views over the Berwick district, a Bird Hide beside Basalt Lake, a rose garden that bursts into colour each spring, and a dedicated playground for younger visitors. The park also hosts a weekly Parkrun every Saturday morning and has an on-site café.

Pioneers Park

Located on Lyall Road, Pioneers Park occupies the former site of Berwick Primary School. The original school building, dating to 1870, has been thoughtfully restored and converted into a café and function centre. At close to two hectares, the park offers a bandstand rotunda, a children’s playground, open gathering spaces, and pathways flanked by deciduous trees — making it a lovely spot for a relaxed afternoon outing.

The Old Cheese Factory

Originally part of the historic Springfield Estate, the Old Cheese Factory allows visitors to step back in time and explore heritage buildings set within beautifully landscaped gardens, along with a large children’s playground and barbecue and picnic facilities. The site features the 1860s Springfield Homestead, Cheese Factory and Kitchen Wash House.

Today it serves as a vibrant community hub, hosting art exhibitions, workshops, events and the popular Casey Farmers Market, held on the fourth Saturday of each month with around 30 stalls of fresh produce direct from local growers.

Historic High Street

A stroll along Berwick’s High Street is a journey through the suburb’s history. The central median strip gardens, watched over by two white lion statues in front of the war memorial at the Clyde Road junction, provide a picturesque focal point. The streetscape is lined with significant 19th-century buildings, including the Berwick Inn, the Mechanics Institute and the former post office, all well preserved and easily explored on foot.

Akoonah Park Market

Held every Sunday at Akoonah Park just off High Street, the Akoonah Park Market is a beloved local institution. Stalls offer a broad mix of craft, fresh produce, plants, clothing and bric-a-brac, making it an ideal way to spend a Sunday morning browsing and sampling local goods.

Cardinia Creek Parklands

For those who love the outdoors, Cardinia Creek Parklands is a must-visit, offering walking trails, picnic spots and wildlife viewing opportunities, ideal for families, fitness enthusiasts and anyone looking for a peaceful escape.

The parklands follow the natural creek corridor and provide a welcome counterpoint to the surrounding suburban landscape.

Fountain Gate Shopping Centre

Just four kilometres west of Berwick in Narre Warren, Fountain Gate is one of Melbourne’s major regional shopping destinations. The centre comprises a large selection of major retailers, over 300 speciality stores and an extensive range of showrooms at the adjacent Casey Lifestyle Centre — well worth a visit for a comprehensive shopping experience.
