Mount Waverley is a large residential suburb 16 km south-east of Melbourne’s CBD, sitting within the City of Monash and bounded by Highbury Road to the north, Ferntree Gully Road to the south, Huntingdale Road to the west and Blackburn Road to the east. The  suburb has a population of around 35,000 and is one of Monash’s most established residential communities, with a significant and growing Chinese-Australian population that has contributed to a diverse café and dining culture around the Village precinct.

Mount Waverley

History

The area was surveyed in 1853 and named after Sir Walter Scott’s Waverley novels by the owner of a privately planned township near what is now the junction of High Street Road and Stephensons Road. The ‘Mount’ prefix was added in 1905 to distinguish it from the neighbouring Glen Waverley, a nod to the elevated ridge running through the suburb’s northern half. St Stephen’s Anglican church, opened in 1865, is the oldest surviving building in the Waverley district.

A school was opened in 1905 and a post office opened the same year, but meaningful settlement remained slow. The railway line from Malvern East reached Mount Waverley in 1930, and the suburb’s census population grew fourfold in the following decade. Rapid residential expansion arrived with the postwar years — A.V. Jennings built a succession of planned estates from the early 1950s onwards, and a modern shopping centre opened next to the railway station in 1959. The suburb is particularly noted for its heritage streetscapes, a legacy of the interwar planning that preceded actual construction. Riversdale Golf Club, Victoria’s second oldest, has occupied its grounds near Huntingdale Road since transferring there in 1927. The popular Melbourne street directory Melway was first produced in a garage in Mount Waverley in 1966.

Things To Do

Mount Waverley Village

The suburb’s civic and social heart sits immediately beside the railway station in Hamilton Place — a compact precinct of cafés, bakeries, restaurants, specialty retailers and service businesses that has been the gathering point for the community since the first L-shaped shopping centre was built here in 1959. Several good Vietnamese and Chinese restaurants, local bakeries and coffee shops make it a natural stop before or after a walk in one of the nearby reserves. A Sunday village market adds to the neighbourhood feel on selected dates.

Valley Conservation Reserve

One of Melbourne’s most surprising suburban bushland pockets, Valley Conservation Reserve preserves around 20 hectares of remnant stringybark woodland in the creek valley just east of the Village. Walking tracks loop through the reserve past a scarred tree of Aboriginal cultural significance — the bark removed by Kulin peoples for canoe-making — through wetland areas and past a large nature-based adventure playground suited to children of all ages. The reserve rewards repeat visits as the birdlife shifts with the seasons; magpies, butcherbirds, noisy miners and kookaburras are resident regulars.

Damper Creek Reserve

Running through Mount Waverley’s northern half from near Highbury Road to the boundary of the Riversdale Golf Club, Damper Creek Reserve is a linear ecological corridor of native bush, creek banks, wetland ponds and quiet walking paths. The creek feels remarkably wild given its suburban setting — herons stand in the shallows, purple swamp hens patrol the edges of the pond, and the tree canopy overhead is continuous enough to muffle the surrounding streets. A children’s playground with a treehouse, slides and a blue-tongue lizard climbing sculpture marks the mid-point of the trail.

Scotchmans Creek Trail

Scotchmans Creek forms Mount Waverley’s southern drainage corridor and the shared-use Scotchmans Creek Trail passes along it, linking the suburb westward toward East Malvern railway station and eastward through flood retarding basins to Valley Reserve and beyond to Jells Park. The Mount Waverley section is largely flat, pleasant and well-used by walkers, joggers and cyclists, with native vegetation lining the banks and consistent birdlife at the Melbourne Water basin sections.

Riversdale Golf Club

Established in 1892 and relocated to its present grounds in 1927, Riversdale Golf Club is Victoria’s second oldest golf club. The 18-hole course was designed by noted architect Alex Russell and the gardens landscaped by Edna Walling — the grounds feature stone bridges, tranquil lakes, mature Northern and Southern Hemisphere trees and undulating tree-lined fairways. The club has hosted the Australian PGA Championship, the Victorian Open and the Victorian Amateur Championship. Members-only, though visiting golfers are welcomed as guests.

Pinewood Shopping Village

At the south-eastern corner of the suburb, Pinewood Shopping Village is a neighbourhood precinct built by A.V. Jennings in the late 1950s at the head of the Scotchmans Creek corridor. Coles, a butcher, pharmacy, cafés, Asian restaurants and the Waverley Cinema anchor a centre that retains the compact, practical character of a 1950s local shopping village. The cinema is a genuine community asset in a suburb otherwise reliant on Glen Waverley and Chadstone for larger screen options.
